This is a 1954 XK120 Fixed Head Coupe finished in 2010 Jaguar silver. It has a black interior, and gray head linier with color matched disc wheels. The fresh restoration included new paint new stainless steel exhaust, headliner, door panels and carpets, all new burly walnut veneer over solid walnut wood, new window felting new wood floorboards and trunk boards, rubber weather stripping, new wiring harness new batteries window felts. The car runs and drives good handles well (see video) and has 77919 miles. It has a period correct 3 ½ liter motor recently rebuilt. The new breaks (see photos) stop smoothly and efficiently.
I purchased the car as a neglected restoration and as such many parts were in boxes. The previous owner had made it most of the way through the job consisting of a new paint, custom interior, a rebuilt motor etc when disaster struck. The new paint began to flake off dew to improper surface preparation. At this point I think he just gave up on the project.
New paint and body work was in order. The old paint job was completely stripped off. The bare metal surface (see photos restoration) was chemically treated with a special metal etching solution and primed with an epoxy surfacer primer. After many block sanding applications to insure dead flat body panels the final coats were applied. We used Sikkens automotive products, with three coats of color and three heavy coats of clear, all applied in a down draft bake booth and baked for one hour at 160` F. We allowed 2 weeks for final curing before color sanding and polishing.
The new interior started with a grey headliner, followed by new wood. The new wood was hand crafted solid walnut sub straight with walnut burl veneer. All the wood components are custom fit including the instrument panel, glove box panel and door, top cross member with the ashtray, door panel tops, window surrounds and "A" pillars. All veneers are book matched like the origin woodwork. It was finished off in high gloss polyurethane and hand rubbed for a sumptuous luster. Finally the black interior was trimmed out with new door panels, new kick panels and under dash panel, and new Winton Wool carpets. The seat leather was good so was reconditioned them in black.
The new wiring harness is a big plus. Many difficulties with Lucus electronics are solved with quality proper wiring and fresh grounding. I have rewired several Jags to find that 90% of electrical issues are solved by this not so simple upgrade. All of the systems on the car do work with the exception of the heater switch and original Smith and Sons radio. It is missing the cord that connects the receiver to the amp, and the speaker.
The boot (trunk) is refinished with new floor boards, black mats correct color matched spare. All the surfaces are repainted in silver, with new weather stripping. And deck lid panel. Not supplied with the car is the jack, tool kit, owner's manual or the tire pump.
This car is a great entry level car for the would be Jaguar enthusiast. It would make a good driver and a fun touring car. It is not overly restored yet all the heavy lifting has been done i.e.: engine body and paint, interior, etc. It would do well in any car show or driver class concourse judging. Yet it is not a numbers matching car. The chrome is presentable but could use some freshening. Comparable 100pnt cars have been selling in the 90k-100k range this car is reasonably priced at $65,000.00.
